Where to Start?

  • What is your reason for decluttering (now)? Write it down in one concise sentence “I’m decluttering so that…” (I can have guests over, I can have more time to do my hobby, I have time and money to travel…)

When you lose your way, you can return to your motivation.

  • Joshua Becker suggests grabbing a garbage bag and setting a timer for 1 hour. Move through all areas of clutter and look for items that you can simply throw away - old papers, garbage, wrappers, broken things. Challenge yourself to fill the bag.

Alternately do this with a box to donate.

  • This is a strategy that folks use to get something done by literally finding someone else to do it with them. The secret: you can use a youtube video.

There are tons of “clean with me” videos on youtube, this is when I usually put on a video by The Minimal Mom. Another choice: put on a podcast, audiobook, music or background tv to give yourself some motivation and make decluttering a more pleasurable experience.

  • Cars and Bathrooms are a great place to start because there is usually no or few sentimental items. Set a timer for a short burst such as 15 minutes and see how far you get. Finding peace when you get into your car or walk into your bathroom can give you motivation and energy to work on the rest of your house.

Decluttering is like peeling an onion.

Your house took years if not decades to get this way. It will take time to declutter it too.

You will go through your house and think you have decluttered everything you can. After a while you will realize that you don’t miss what you got rid of, in fact, your life is better without it! Then you will begin to see more that you don’t need, and you will declutter everything possible again. This cycle will happen over and over. You need less than you think.

Joshua Becker

I have read most of his books and decluttered my entire house with his online course, which I fully recommend.

The Minimal Mom

Dawn is a decluttering guru! When I’m lacking motivation, I throw on one of her youtube videos and some earbuds and it helps me get to work.
